With this layers of the atmosphere lesson, students will learn the following:

  1. Earth’s atmosphere is largely responsible for life on Earth. It is composed mostly of nitrogen, and protects us from the sun’s harmful rays as well as objects from outer space.
  2. Temperature changes with altitude. In the troposphere – the layer we live in – temperature gets colder. That is not true for each layer, and students will learn about temperature changes in the layers of the atmosphere.
  3. Each layer of the atmosphere is unique and holds properties that protect humans and provide uses. For example, the ozone layer, which filters UV rays, is located in the stratosphere. The International Space Station is located in the thermosphere, and meteors burn up in the mesosphere.
  4. Air pressure decreases as altitude increases. Gravity pulls most of the atmosphere toward the surface of the Earth.
